Just imagine: over the last two decades or so, the music industry has burned through three generations of MacBooks, DAWs have turned into cloud subscriptions, and producers chase after every new plugin craze. And us? We’re sitting here in front of an Acer Extensa 5630EZ.

Yes, a low-budget laptop from 2009. A device that, in many households today, wouldn’t even be fit to serve as a paperweight. But for us, for 17 years, it was my mobile creative hub.

The Power of Discipline: Windows XP and Cubase SX3

Why put yourself through this? The answer is simple: workflow and consistency. Anyone sitting on an archive of around 600 Cubase projects—as we are—cannot afford to switch operating systems every two years or jump on the software industry’s latest “shiny toy.”

Our system is a time capsule:

  • Windows XP: Lean, direct, without snooping features or background updates that cripple the system in the middle of a recording.
  • Cubase SX3: A DAW that still demands craftsmanship. There are no “Make Hit” buttons here. Here, it’s your ear that counts.

This combination guaranteed data exchange and usability. Need to open a project from 2011? No problem. A beat from 2022? It loads in seconds. This isn’t nostalgia; it’s professional data management.

The 12 GB monster in the basement

Of course, time doesn’t stand still. Over the years, my VST folder grew organically—12 gigabytes of plugins, samples, and data. That’s a drop in the bucket for modern computers, but for my aging Acer and its hardware architecture, it’s pushing the limits.

Every time you run the VST scan these days, you can feel the hardware breathing—or rather, wheezing. We have reached a point where the producer’s intent clashes with the unyielding physics of aging circuitry. It’s become a bit of a lottery: sometimes a license is missing, other times the ASIO driver chokes. We’ve hit the limit.

The Fairy Tale of the Expensive Apple

It is almost amusing to watch young DJ-producers reflexively reach for the most expensive MacBook Pro these days, simply because they saw it in a tutorial. They spend thousands of euros on computing power, only to end up layering three loops that even a pocket calculator could play.

In terms of productive output, the “industry standard” is often little more than an overpriced status symbol. Acer has proven that affordability is possible—if you really want it. It is a matter of determination: getting the most out of what you have, rather than trying to compensate for a lack of talent with expensive hardware.

Looking ahead

But even the most loyal soldier deserves retirement. The Acer has done its duty. It has proven that discipline and a clear workflow carry more weight than any marketing promise from Apple or Microsoft.

What’s next? Maybe no more laptop. Perhaps a desktop powerhouse that treats those 600 projects with the same reverence I do. But one thing is certain: the software stays. The workflow stays. Because at the end of the day, it’s the producer who writes the hit—not the processor.

This laptop was also used for live shows over a period of several years; it didn’t just stay in the studio. In a live setting, it served as a playback machine, sampler, and signal generator.

The optimal solution for the future

Several factors had to be considered to solve the problem. Ultimately, we found a very simple solution: a Dell Optiplex desktop PC from 2012—a former office lease return. These machines are typically well-equipped, well-maintained, and often over-specced for standard office tasks, making this particular model ideal for our requirements. Since this series succeeded the XP era and was designed for newer operating systems, the PC handles Windows XP with ease. This is highly beneficial when loading Cubase with its library of over 10 GB of plugins. Thanks to a robust backup system and thorough studio documentation, we were able to perfectly restore the old setup, including all the hard drives containing projects, sounds, samples, and master/mix files.

A proper PC like this also features standard ports, allowing us to reconnect an Emagic Unitor 8. This is one of the best MIDI interfaces ever made; launched before the year 2000, it offers 8 MIDI inputs and 8 MIDI outputs.
