Sample Pack – Vermona ER9 (1976)

New sample pack with drum sounds from the legendary VERMONA ER9 rhythm box

The Vermona ER9 rhythm box was developed and manufactured in East Germany around 1976. For its time, the device could certainly compete with comparable models from Japan or Europe. However, it was primarily intended for the East German market.

Inside the device, we find approximately 10 small circuit boards with a purely analog design. Electrical engineering is universal, regardless of whether it’s used in capitalist or socialist systems. The circuits for drum sounds are quite simple and based on the same principles.

For a musical instrument from the Eastern Bloc in the 1970s, it remains a remarkable piece of equipment even today. Newer serial numbers allow for the retrofitting of a MIDI kit, enabling the instrument to be controlled by other MIDI devices, such as a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation). This has the advantage of allowing synchronization with the DAW’s tempo.

Going even deeper, it would be possible to retrofit the device with nine individual outputs for the nine instruments. But what’s even more astonishing is that the convenience of modern sound shaping via rotary controls could also be retrofitted here, to a limited extent. Almost all the instruments have rotary resistors in their circuitry, which were used to adjust the sound back then. These could be bypassed or removed and replaced with rotary controls on the top of the device.

However, if you simply want to work with the sounds of the Vermona ER9, you can use the new sample pack. This pack includes the nine factory sounds and an additional set of processed sounds. These include the bass drum, snare drums, tom, and bongo. Each of these was recorded individually and processed through a Vermona 1642 mixer (manufactured in 1985 in East Germany). The sounds were then processed using the channel strip’s EQ. A Vermona spring reverb from the 1970s was also used in some of the recordings. Special sounds were created from the remaining individual samples and are also included in the additional pack. In total, the additional pack contains 49 individual sounds.

Sampled sounds from kitchen containers and “waste” produce truly astonishing sonic results. As part of an art film production and a folklore production, custom percussion instruments were built using tin cans, oil cans, and other unusual objects.

Sample pack – drum sounds – rubber

Sample Pack – Drum Sounds – In 2011, we sampled a condom and created a whole range of percussive sounds. As a demo, we made a techno track consisting entirely of these sounds. Even now, in 2025, no one has replicated this. Therefore, it was a truly unique idea. – 53 sounds (€9.00)

Sample pack – Space & SciFi Movie Sounds

Sample pack – Sounds, noises, and effects in the sci-fi style of the 60s and 70s. – 53 sounds (€9.00)

The sample pack was produced using a vintage setup. The base is a Yamaha PSS390 from 1991. Essentially an entry-level keyboard with small keys, it cost around 400 DM. Its special feature, however, was the switchable FM synthesizer with eight parameters in eight steps. This brought it very close to a DX7. The keyboard signal went to a Vermona PDD501 (digital delay), then to a Vermona Phaser80, then to a Monacor Reverberation REV-25, and finally to a Yamaha FX900. This resulted in a wide variety of sounds and effects.
